Building Science and Services Project 1. Site Study

As a group, we have chosen our site to be the Suriamas Condominium. This project is to observe and lookout for key problems in the building, with the purpose to exercise our skills in applying solutions to these places. To my surprise the condition of this buildings services as a whole is not as unpleasant as we thought it would be. Overall, it is a decent place with adequate resources and facilities. Nevertheless, in light of this assignment, we still managed to find defects.
From the site visit conducted, we as a group have come to find several flaws within the residing structure of the building. Some are manageable and accepted that certain such form of maintenance can only happen by duration. However, some are found to be in careless condition. In some aspects it may even be considered a hazard to the public. Here are our findings:
  1. Poor drainage system
  2. Inadequate shading and Roofing
  3. Exposed lectrical wiring
  4. Poor Lighting
  5. Exposed ventilation
  6. Fire safety
  7. Elevators

As listed are the the key issues that we have come to find, however I will not go into detail of all. Here, I highlight the drawbacks of Poor Drainage and Inadequate shading and Roofing. For a building that was refurbished, due to its structure, it shows that it was given an update not too long back( I assumed so because at the moment it is still undergoing improvements).
As a note, alot of these observations are made based on the exterior appearance because we were not permitted to view any further.

Round 2! Group assignment ended, another one begins. Upon completing the first, we were asked to chose a particular insect, and of the 6 choices we chose what seemed most appropriate. Yet the journey through this process was an utmost disgust. You'll understand in a moment. One word says it all. Worms. All things long and squirmy, we had to research that. Worms,Centipedes and Millipedes was the given topic and in 3 days we presented our findings. The process in presenting our visual board. The reason to why I called it a visual board is because we were meant to visualize aspects of our insect while each of the components and facts remain intact with the rest of the information gathered. For the reason that it would be too much or hectic to look for attributes with the possibility of having overlapping information, we divided the load and my findings were its behaviour.

Recap on the Rise and fall of Project Archy

To recap from the experience that we had, it was an enjoyable assignment where we see variations of designs and builds of the structures. This experiment showed us that each team had their own strengths and weaknesses in the arch. But what I think mattered at the end of the day is how well-rounded ones build is. This is because, if we were to apply it to our physical context, the main goal is to create and design a unique habitable living space. If that were the case, ours would probably kill people in regions where seismic activity is high but will stand out if it were a bunker.  From what I have learnt, is that the balance is key. Design is an important component but at the end of the day, functionality remains the priority.
