The Artist...The jeweller

Background
Jonathan Yun. A famous jewelry designer born and raised in the hustles of Penang, Malaysia. He's a graduate from RMIT, Australia (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). He specials in fine metal and gemology, which along the process inclined him to the path that hes is currently.

Inspirations
A majority of his designs are "neo-peranakan", locally inspired pieces because of our rich heritage and beautiful nature. Which aided him in obtaining his awards in Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Challenges
Like all aspiring artist in the industry there is bound to be counterfeits and plagiarisms of their artwork. And based on the articles read, and interviews; Jonathan Yun projects himself as a man who is emotionally attached to his makings. Therefore, for instances such as this to occur, enrages him. Many a times bringing him to the point of retrieval; nevertheless he perservered ad uses it as a driving factor to create more designs unque to this taste. The one jewelry that speaks of his struggles would that of "The Phoenix". Representing he's risen from the fallen ashes of disappointment, moving forward and turning over a new leaf from the frustration the past brings to mind.



Materials & Techniques
Most of his jewelry are casted in wax whereby he shapes it and forms it beforehand. 
His most commonly used and favoured metal would be sterling silver and gold as it is the easiest to handle and easily marketable. However this does not limit his creativity as he believes in molding matter rather than allowing it to decide his abilities. As of now, he toys and test the idea of materials such as fabrics, textiles, porcelain, etc. Some final pieces he incorporated items such as shark tooth, fossils and butterfly wings for emphasis. In the interview that I conducted along with a friend he mentioned that an element he would like to give a try  would be ice, but because if its weak condition it would be unrealistic to put into action.

As a group, we have chosen our site to be the Suriamas Condominium. This project is to observe and lookout for key problems in the building, with the purpose to exercise our skills in applying solutions to these places. To my surprise the condition of this buildings services as a whole is not as unpleasant as we thought it would be. Overall, it is a decent place with adequate resources and facilities. Nevertheless, in light of this assignment, we still managed to find defects. Round 2! Group assignment ended, another one begins. Upon completing the first, we were asked to chose a particular insect, and of the 6 choices we chose what seemed most appropriate. Yet the journey through this process was an utmost disgust. You'll understand in a moment. One word says it all. Worms. All things long and squirmy, we had to research that. Worms,Centipedes and Millipedes was the given topic and in 3 days we presented our findings. The process in presenting our visual board. The reason to why I called it a visual board is because we were meant to visualize aspects of our insect while each of the components and facts remain intact with the rest of the information gathered. For the reason that it would be too much or hectic to look for attributes with the possibility of having overlapping information, we divided the load and my findings were its behaviour.

Recap on the Rise and fall of Project Archy

To recap from the experience that we had, it was an enjoyable assignment where we see variations of designs and builds of the structures. This experiment showed us that each team had their own strengths and weaknesses in the arch. But what I think mattered at the end of the day is how well-rounded ones build is. This is because, if we were to apply it to our physical context, the main goal is to create and design a unique habitable living space. If that were the case, ours would probably kill people in regions where seismic activity is high but will stand out if it were a bunker.  From what I have learnt, is that the balance is key. Design is an important component but at the end of the day, functionality remains the priority.
