Final Lap

Image
Here. The final piece to ending the progress of this assignment. The compilation of drawings, character, layout and insect diagrams. All fitted to tell the story and the process of how it all comes together to show my merchants relevance to the his living space. Like the idea of my abstract, I kept in mind the design language which is Centralization. From the center, my insect breaks out in to several segments.

Character Design

Image
Looks a bit weak? Apologies, I literally had no idea or a hero that I envisioned. Like all heroes or villains, there is a story behind the life they chose to walk away from. For my character, the man I envisioned him to be is a merchant for hire. (also because I could not decide)  So here's the backstory... A man, once a boy, unwanted, unloved and stateless with no one to turn to or to rely on; survived on his own amongst the homeless in the dumps of the city. One day a man came around, looking for children to 'recruit', however the purpose was unknown. Given a label A-26, he spent years being trained in a special task force of a hidden society. This organisation experimented on men, finding ways to develop the next form of weaponry. A-26 was part of a successful task force that was merged with centipede like characters, as a team they did the bidding of others; assassinations, toppling government etc. They were effective beyond expected, until one unfatef...

A look at the Abstract aspect of Insects

Image
Do not know what you are looking at?  Me neither, at first. It is completely different from where I began the process of this assignment. In this task, we are to extract attributes, behavior, characteristics that defines our insect. And later, change its interpretation into the form of formal organisation, design language; even as we identify the tangible and intangible components of the insect.  The organisation that I have chosen is Centralization, whereby the different parts of the piece meets at a point. Through several stages of trial and error in defining my language, I have concluded with final results. As I have chosen, Violent, Protective, Segmented.  Upon stating these attributes, you should be able to match the keywords to my art piece. All of which represents my centipede. This is because, like the centipede, the exaggerated segments in my abstract art shows the body. Using warm colors and the erratic patterns, I display its violent behavior co...

Understanding the End to know the Beginning. Part 2

Image
Uncle Handsome now explains his interior concept... Porch Once the base is completed, he chose the finishing touches to give the porch a proper appearance. To follow the trend as before this, he used natural slates because of its rugged and tough exterior. The warm brown colour tones of the tile makes up keeping easy and appealing. And if he ever decide to give it a new look all he needs to do is give it a nice coat. However, time does take a toll on this material because in the long run in wear and tear; pieces of slate is chipped away bit by bit. But that is considered out of date. Nowadays, tiles are in trend. These are longer lasting, durable, easily maintained; a definite improvement. Column and Beams Each column and beam on its own, has a bare concrete look. So to clean up the look of the interior and to fit with the theme... He used wooden panels to cover up after he knocked down the center, creating an open counter looking into the kitchen. Fo...

Understanding the End to know the Beginning. Part 1

Because this site has already been erected for the past 20 years since my uncle moved here, to help me understand the house better, he walked me from the planning process to the site itself. To start it all off, he began by saying that when it comes to designing a house to fit its owners, with freedom in choices, there still are SOP(standard operating procedures) that has to met. I knew little about the long list of regulations that the contractor has to consider and keep in mind, while they try as much to keep in the interest of the client. Groundwork and its Foundation Anyways, he began by explaining that this house and the area it sits on was developed by the Sunway Group. He went on, first explaining the foundation. Due to the known fact that most of the land in Sunway used to be a mining site, even after the groundwork was done including the piling, an additional ground beam had to be placed. From his description, it was placed from the car porch to as far as the y...

When reality hits you...

When reality hits you hard; knowing that this could be our possible future. What is it that I'm talking about? If it is not known enough, Interior architecture is really kicking me hard to the point where even my parents are questioning my decisions whether or not to forgo this course. Nevertheless, work still needs to be done until such a time where I make a decision. Hence, let's go. As a brief introduction, for our final assignment in this module we are to go out on our own and select a site visit. This is done to help us understand, visualize and help us connect the information from the lectures to the site. That is why preferably, a house undergoing renovation or construction would be ideal for this task but Ms.Sharon being understanding allowed us to make do. The site my team chose is that of an uncle of mine who lives nearby, within Bandar Sunway. He too, so happens to be working in this line.

Contouring & Hatching Techniques

Image
From the image above, you can see that this is my result of a variation of contour and hatching techniques. The purpose by which is to expose us to the different styles available as well as the 'feel' it projects. I am familiar with two styles; of which are hatching and cross-hatching as mastering the basics seems to be the priority. Although that may be true, I learnt two new techniques that I have come to appreciate. Number 1 being its complexity in its form yet being so simplistic in the way it is performed.  Stippling is the definition of precision and patience accompanied with all these attributes as a lot comes into consideration when doing it. When people look at art pieces as such, they are amazed at the effort it took to produce such results; it matches the work input too. Everything comes into play when stippling; the line weight and thickness. the spacing between each dot as well as the pressure applied. It all adds up to macro image. The next one I found ...

A memory in repeat

Image
Perspective! This is the practice sheet that was done in class. I personally like this better than the following. Looks more natural. One-Point Perspective. Honestly the best and my favorite of the two. Two-Point Perspective

Perspective. What a way to remember an old assignment.

Image
Oh how this brings back memories of previous drawings. So much mixed feelings, yet here we are again. Round 2. This is my one point perspective; done based on an image found on the internet. Most of the components within this drawing matched fine. Although my human figure could have been a lot better. Two point perspective. This is truly the definition of mind boggling pain to me,as I have always had the difficulty in seeing it. Thankfully, after many trials and practice runs, i managed to present one that is admission worthy.

Revisiting Vegetables again

Image
Hello vegetables again. I thought foundation would be the end of sketching fruits and veges but little did I know that it would follow me to degree. The reason to why we drew this is because Ms.Aida and Ms.Sharmila wanted to see where each of us individually stand in terms of our skill and our eye for composition. As this were the 2 important criteria necessary before we focus on being detailed. So this is my practice sheet.

Scribble Scrabble

Image
Looks like nonsense. I do too, however this was to teach us precision and consistency. As our lecturers stresses on the great importance of Line Weight, Straight Lines and such. So we practiced and practiced until I was literally tired of seeing shapes.

A House of dreams...Much Pain though

Image
Behold the stuff of nightmares of ones who know nothing of the interior architecture world. On this new assignment, we are given a home concept idea. I personally found it difficult at first because I honestly did not know where to begin, let alone lead my team in trying to finish the model. The part that I thought to be tricky was the mezzanine floor. Where if it were too big or too small, it would be obvious that we ran of course. Above, is the 3D modelling of two sections in the house. This is the side view and the interior view; facing the library.

Pre-Orthographic Projection

Image
A simple idea so that we understand the different views of something as simple as a solid object.

Orthographic Projection: Model House

Image
Does this look familiar? This is the plan based on the model house that my team built. From the house we somewhat worked backwards to get a better understanding as well as to see whether it matches with the model. This is two of the sections that we drew to give the idea of the inside of the house.

The Beautiful Closure of the House

Image
After weeks of stressing about how the house model would turn out. I'm truly relieved to see it all come together perfectly. Everything was on point; with plenty of hard work, we managed to cut, measure, assemble and erect the structure with minimal mistakes. My first, my joy. The view from the mezzanine floor. The overall layout coming to reality. An interior shot of how one would live in a space as such. The view through the perspec into the stairs leading up to the mezzanine.

Recap on the Rise and fall of Project Archy

To recap from the experience that we had, it was an enjoyable assignment where we see variations of designs and builds of the structures. This experiment showed us that each team had their own strengths and weaknesses in the arch. But what I think mattered at the end of the day is how well-rounded ones build is. This is because, if we were to apply it to our physical context, the main goal is to create and design a unique habitable living space. If that were the case, ours would probably kill people in regions where seismic activity is high but will stand out if it were a bunker.  From what I have learnt, is that the balance is key. Design is an important component but at the end of the day, functionality remains the priority.

Arch me

Image
To continue from where we left off, its been a week since the last post and a lot has happened. Within the week we not only received new homework, a somewhat refresher for a project was given. Here is how it went... Remember how many a times we have big ambitions but sometimes we are restricted by our abilities? Yeah. That was pretty much what happened. We had plans to reinterpret "The Parthenon" by merging its design with that of a dome. But it was later that we came into realisation that we didn't have the time nor the skills to perform it. We had to improvise and make it workable in order to save time. This is our process... Test : Load We needed to meet the basic requirement of a minimum of 4 phones. Hence to achieve the required mark and above, we tested our arch in several ways. However, following the footsteps of our forefathers, we studied the different types of arch throughout the ages; looking for one that suits our use and enables us to alter...

Arch me 2

It begins...

Well a great hello once again to the great bloggers world. To be honest, I'm not exactly the type who shares much about myself, let alone blog about it online. Nevertheless, ola I'm here. To start it off, this subject is called construction and technology, with Ms. Sharon being our lecturer. Class began with quite a slow mood for me as I was mentally nor physically prepared to begin the semester at such a high pace. I'm quite guilty to be falling asleep on the first day of class. Such a bad impression given, but I shall fix that. Hopefully.

Deeper is what they want

Image
So hey! A continuation from the last topic. We were talking about arthropods (if unfamiliar refer to the previous post). This time we are going in deeper...in visualizing it.*sigh* its already hair raising looking at it, now we have to individually visualize our info and draw out a detailed version of our insects. Not exactly how I planned to spend my Friday nights doing... The species I've chosen is that of the Colopendra Heros. Originating from, North America or Vietnam, there creatures are considered one of the most venomous insects available. However, it is commonly mistaken by the term venomous and deadly no doubt most of the time it comes hand in hand. This centipede is venomous as its poison can inflict severe and serious pain, organ failure and loss of limbs in certain cases. although not proven, there are however death reports caused by this insect. Anyways, we've driven off-course quite abit, so lets get back on track. The beginning of the visualisation process wa...

Creeping beneath my skin

Disgusting, just plain disgusting. spending time looking in depth at these Arthropods (yes this is the correct term) was just hair raising for me. And no, I'm not afraid of insects, I just dislike how all insects look. As if they were born to give people the creeps. I'm cool with it as long as I'm looking at it through a separated glass or its deep fried then by all means bring 'em out. Of the three, Centipedes fascinated me the most. Yes it is the ugliest and yes the most unwanted of the three. but I was drawn to how much similarity I've found in its behavior as well as us human beings. Centipedes have strong emotions. They're protective creatures; like a mother to her child, it curls around it till its birth. It is defensive as well has a distinct aggresive attitude; when threatened, it stings its predator or prey making sure you do not make the same mistake of disturbing their haven the second time. As you can see, we are in many ways similar to the livin...

Here again

Image
Round 2! Group assignment ended, another one begins. Upon completing the first, we were asked to chose a particular insect, and of the 6 choices we chose what seemed most appropriate. Yet the journey through this process was an utmost disgust. You'll understand in a moment. One word says it all. Worms. All things long and squirmy, we had to research that. Worms,Centipedes and Millipedes was the given topic and in 3 days we presented our findings. The process in presenting our visual board. The reason to why I called it a visual board is because we were meant to visualize aspects of our insect while each of the components and facts remain intact with the rest of the information gathered. For the reason that it would be too much or hectic to look for attributes with the possibility of having overlapping information, we divided the load and my findings were its behaviour.

Groupies not Homies...yet

Image
Activity 1. I got to know 5 new enthusiastic team members who are diligent in their work as much as their humour! To begin, I was thankful that my team leader stepped up to take the role in leading the team for I personally would rather work on order basis. It would have been a struggle for me if I were to be in that position as I feel I am a better contributor.  From the moment we put up the butter sheets on the wall to the point of disassembling the project, I felt there was order and direction that I am fond off.  Lead by Pujah, we divided the task to maximise output in our work. For example a team was sent to obtain the required poses for the progressional drawings where we had to make sure our models action coincides with the 2 teams. Simultaneously, the members that stayed back set up as well as brainstorm on ways to put the idea on paper, literally.  Once the surveying team returned, we kicked up our sketching tools and began the composition for the post...

Flashback to awkwardness

Image
Remember when I was reenacting the poses for a more detailed view of each action? Well here is how it actually went. I was having a difficulty visualizing how a pose may be extreme but the problem for me was that I did not know how to imagine it without giving it a try. Here's the proof. Not the best position to be sleeping in; even if you're desperate If you're feeling lonely, try this out for size. Koala inspired. And the last for the best. the Hakuna Matata. It will really Hakuna the tatas. Best option of the three. These are some of the many ridiculous poses. Nevertheless, a good experience.

Human study gone weird

Image
After having not touch any form of drawing tool in months, coming back to class was a mix of feelings as I did not know whether to feel overwhelmed or excited with the start of the degree. Nevertheless, those thoughts had to be put aside as we have received the first assignment for the week. We were required to apply what we have learned from the lecture on Anthropometry which is basically the study of the physical properties of the human body; dimension of body size and shape. Here is the first 12 daily activity. From the poses, you can see that I have chosen simple actions that we can all relate to. Such as texting, eating, excreting, etc. I tried as much to mimic the pose in its essence as I converted the image to a sketch. Most of which I personally tried on. The hassle that I faced was getting the measurements as accurate as it can be. On this image, I tested different poses that I thought would be extreme. The suggestion to change the item from a normal pants ...
